Twelfth Night or What You Will by William Shakespeare
Wednesday 24th October 1990
Emmanuel Baptist Church, Trowbridge
Viola and Sebastian, twins, are separated during a shipwreck. Viola, thinking her brother dead, disguises herself as a man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino. He sends Viola/Cesario to woo Lady Olivia on his behalf. Orsino does not know that Viola has fallen in love with him. Olivia is in mourning and refuses to accept the advances of any man. This does not keep her from falling in love with the disguised Viola.
Her uncle, Sir Toby Belch, spends his time drinking with Olivia’s clown, Feste, and Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Because of the arrogance of Olivia’s steward, Malvolio, Maria, Olivia’s chamber woman, plots with Sir Toby, Aguecheek, and Feste to get even. They dupe him into wearing yellow stockings cross gartered, which Olivia detests. She thinks him mad and he’s committed to a dark room. The arrival of Sebastian creates more confusion as Olivia mistakes him for the disguised Viola and marries him! More confusion reigns until the twins are finally reunited.
